Murder Charges on 4 Cops in Jayaraj Fenix Case, Tamil Nadu Chennai

Since Two weeks we are watching the viral sketches all over internet of Jayaraj(59)and his son Fenix (31) from Tuticorin, lying down in blood soaked lungis who were beaten up to death in the Santhankulam police station. They were brought into police custody for alleged violation of Covid-19 lockdown rules as they keept their shop open 15 minutes longer than the permitted hours. Both of them died in the hospital on June 22nd with several internal and external injuries and huge bleeding.

After video gone viral on Instagram by Mirchi_Suchi, poeple joined an online movement demanding Justice for Jayaraj and Bennix against Police brutality. Comparing it to the recent George Floyd Murder by the cop and the whole movement againt Racism and Police Brutality, India started Twitter storms with #justiceforJayarajandFenix, to which peoppe all over the globe joined in.

Finally the four Policemen involved in this heinous act, Inspector Sridhar, SI Raghu Ganesh, SI Balakrishnan and Constable Murugan of the Santhankulam Police station have been arrested under the charges of murder. With the suggestion from the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, the Crime Branch of Tamil Nadu's Crime Investigation Department is now taken over the case.

Earlier, the state police had only registered case of suspicious deaths stating the reasons of Fever and Breathlessnes to make it look like Covid deaths. But the Crime Branch has now altered both the FIRs to include custodial murder charges against the policemen.

The CCTV footage of the Santhankulam Police station from 19th June were found suspiciously deleted as it could have brought strong evidences to the case. A Head Constable testified to prove the role of the police in the brutal crime and the court asked to provide security to insure the safety of the witness. The court, on tuesday, ordered to work on the basis of post mortem reports.

The court also initiated contempt action against Deputy Superintendent and an Additional Deputy Superintendent.
