On Wednesday 15th July many high profiled Twitter accounts were hacked in US. This hack affected powerful Twitter accounts including Barack Obama, Bill gates, Jeff Bezoz, Elon Musk, Rapper Kanye West, corporate accounts of Apple and Uber.
These verified accounts started tweeting a message saying "I am giving back to my community due to covid-19 ! All bitcoin sent to my address below will be sent back doubled. Only doing this for the next 30 minutes! Enjoy."
Twitter tried to regain control by deleting the tweets but some of the accounts were tweeting the same message even after that.
In four hours, the bitcoin wallet promoted in the tweets received over $100,000 by 300 transactions.
Considering the incident Twitter support said "The coordinated social engineering attack was executed by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal system and tools." In another tweet they said " We're looking into what other malicious activity they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it."
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted that it was a "tough day for us at Twitter."
"We all feel terrible this happened," Dorsey added. "We're diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened."
To gain control of the platform, Twitter had to suspend some account actions and prevented verified users from tweeting while the company's investigation was ongoing.
Many unverified users made fun of the situation as verified accounts were not able to tweet and had to communicate through retweets.
Some also tweeted "This will go down as the biggest hiest on twitter".
